Skin – we all have it and many of us are not happy with it. Especially the facial, visible area is of great concern to many of us. Fortunately, we have amazing treatments available to help us look our very best. One sure-fire and quick way to do this is to enhance your beautiful facial features by either highlighting them or by ‘toning down’ those lines and skin folds that inevitably appear with the progress of time. The careful use of wrinkle reducing injections with for instance Botulinum Toxin A (BOTOX® or DYSPORT® in S.A.) to temporarily prevent the underlying facial muscles from contracting and enhancing those wrinkles and lines is a relatively safe and effective way to help achieve this, and so is the use of Skin fillers or Dermal fillers such as  RESTYLANE®,  JUVEDERM®,  TEOXYAL®, Perfectha®, Emervel®  or  ELLANSE™,  which are commonly used in South Africa. These products are used extensively throughout the world, and on a daily basis, to achieve aesthetic improvements as mentioned here. Fat transfer is another great way to help restoring a fresh, beautiful and youthful look – without the need for surgery.*

Dermal Fillers FAQ - Questions Frequently Asked by Patients

What are Dermal Fillers made of?

Skin Fillers or Dermal Fillers are made from various substances. One’s own body fat is an excellent filler that can also be used.

The commonest constituent of readily available fillers (e.g. RESTYLANE®, JUVEDERM®, TEOSYAL®, Perfectha® or Emervel®) is a natural substance called Hyaluronic Acid,  which is a natural constituent of normal body supportive tissue and especially that of skin. Our bodies produce Hyaluronic Acid in abundance while we are young, but then gets ‘lazy’ with age and the amounts produced diminishes with time, causing dry and ‘loose’ skin. The Hyaluronic Acid molecules deposited in the skin will over time attract more water to the area and thereby plump up the site leading to a ‘filling effect’. The outer skin surface is better hydrated and the skin appears smoother and with less wrinkles etc. Being a natural product, Hyaluronic Acid is metabolised (degraded & absorbed) by our bodies and hence, does not stay in our bodies permanently, necessitating further treatments every so often.

A new type of filler known as “Ellanse” is made from another very safe compound called Polycaprolactone microspheres. ELLANSE™ has a very stable structure which stimulates the skin to produce more of its own collagen and elastin, which can help achieve a longer lasting and more natural effect.

What are Dermal Fillers used for?

Skin fillers help to soften facial lines / wrinkles and restore lost volume and add a youthful fullness to the face. The ‘lighter’ fillers are also used to add hydration to the skin and hands or neck areas.
Dermal fillers can be used to:
.   Plump thin lips
.   Enhance shallow contours
.   Soften facial creases and wrinkles
.   Improve the appearance of recessed scars
.   Improve the contours of the nose and chin
.   Hydrate the skin and lips

Would I be a suitable candidate?

Fillers can be used on just about anyone and Dr Bagwandeen at CapeMAC will do a full assessment to ensure that there are no conditions that may negate the use of filler in you. It’s best to stop smoking (totally) and to not take anti-inflammatory products for a few days before the procedure.

How do I best choose the right practitioner and practice for my Dermal Fillers?

Your decision as to which practice or practitioner to choose should be based on the practitioner’s reputation, the practitioner’s apparent skill and the practitioner’s experience. In addition, the practitioner’s ability to communicate with you in a manner that is professional, sincere, unhurried and that makes you feel comfortable is of utmost importance. Please also see the information on “How to choose a Medical Aesthetics Practitioner”. We hope this helps you make the right choice.

What is the cost of Dermal Fillers?

Use our “Prices” section for an up-to-date overview on available treatment options and price ranges for aesthetics treatments at CapeMAC. Always remember: We are a medical practice and as such strive to offer you treatments that actually have proven benefits for the condition/s being treated. It is not always possible to give you accurate treatment prices for aesthetic procedures without properly assessing the extent of the problem and determining the most effective treatment/s for such problem. Contact us now at CapeMAC to book an appointment with Dr Bagwandeen as a first step towards revealing a more radiant and confident you.

How does the Skin Filler get injected?

The procedure itself is done by Dr Manoj Bagwandeen at CapeMAC, after doing detailed assessments – including facial analyses with photographs, and then deciding with you as to what the best treatment should be to get the results you want. At Cape Medical Aesthetics Centre, we use ELLANSE™, Emervel®, JUVEDERM®, Perfectha®, RESTYLANE®,  and TEOXYAL® dermal fillers. The procedure is done in a medical procedure room and local anaesthetic can be applied to the skin before treatment starts. We can also give you a mild sedative, in case you feel anxious. The injection of the filler is done under very controlled techniques and is very gentle. After getting the filler into the area we want it in, Dr Bagwandeen will massage it into place to ‘sculpt’ the desired result.

Is there any recovery or downtime for Dermal Fillers?

There is minimal post-procedure care needed and this will be discussed with you during the consultation. The full procedure takes between 10 – 30 minutes, depending on the areas to be treated, and you are good to go back to your daily activities after the procedure (with some exclusions, of course). Patients do not routinely need any pain-killers after the procedure, but if needed, then Doctor will ensure that you get them.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is the commonest constituent of readily available fillers (e.g. RESTYLANE®, JUVEDERM®, TEOSYAL®, Emervel®, Perfectha®ELLANSE™), which is a natural constituent of normal body supportive tissue and especially that of skin. Our bodies produce Hyaluronic Acid in abundance while we’re young, but then gets ‘lazy’ with age and the amounts produced diminishes with time, causing dry and ‘loose’ skin. Polycaprolactone microspheres is another very safe compound of dermal fillers. A new type of filler known as “Ellanse” is made from it.
